The Many Forms of Cannabis

It’s now the year 2022, the legal cannabis industry is booming, and it’s certainly safe to say that it’s not showing signs of slowing down any time soon. This is great news for newcomers and enthusiasts alike for whom variety is important.

Thankfully, in today’s expansive (and rapidly growing) legal cannabis market — no matter the intention or use  — there are plenty of options around when it comes to choosing how and what products to sample.

Below we’ll explore the many forms of cannabis and cannabis products available for all the canna-curious consumers out there:

1. Flower

First, let’s talk flower. This is perhaps the most common way to consume cannabis. The whole cannabis plant (the bud, leaves, stems, etc.) contains the active cannabinoids that potentially induce psychoactive effects from consumption.

Cannabis Flower by definition:

Flower, or bud, is the smokable, trichome-covered part of a female cannabis plant. Flower is the most popular form of cannabis due to its versatility since it can be consumed in a variety of ways, including smoked in a pipe or joint, vaporized in a vaporizer, or incorporated into edibles.

2. Tinctures

Next, we’ve come to tinctures. Cannabinoids can be extracted into an oil or a tincture as another form of consumption that has been popular throughout history. Oftentimes, tinctures are preferred due to their high concentration of active compounds, which can lead to stronger therapeutic effects.

Additionally, with tinctures, you’re able to control your dosages a bit more, providing for an experience that is uniquely tailored to your own personal self-care and wellness requirements. Consumers are able to absorb the tinctures or oils sublingually, while some cannabis products have the option to be mixed or dissolved into your favorite foods or drinks.

Cannabis Tinctures by definition:

Cannabis tinctures are alcohol-based cannabis extracts—essentially, cannabis-infused alcohol. In fact, tinctures were the main form of cannabis medicine until the United States enacted cannabis prohibition. They’re a great entry point for both recreational and medical consumers looking to ease into smokeless consumption methods.

3. Topicals

Thirdly, let’s now talk topicals. Lotions, balms, and gels infused with cannabis are a great option for the potential treatment of various skin issues. Subsequently, perhaps what is most advantageous about topicals – by placing the desired amount on the area of your body, cannabis-infused topical applications can help localize discomfort – helping you to gain the soothing effects of cannabis without any mind-altering, psychoactive effects.

Considering the fact that consumers do not directly ingest cannabis-infused topicals, these products are typically widely available in various ratios and concentrations of beneficial cannabinoids (such as a 1:1 CBD/THC ratio topical hand cream).

Cannabis Topicals by definition:

A lotion or ointment that is applied directly to the body’s surface. Topicals are utilized for fast-acting localized relief of inflammation and pain. Cannabis topicals are typically non-intoxicating, which allows patients to enjoy the plant’s therapeutic effects without THC’s attendant psychoactivity. This growing category of cannabis treatments has expanded to include transdermal solutions, as well as lubricants, often including essential oils such as clove and wintergreen for additional relief.

4. Concentrates

Last, but certainly not least, let’s discuss concentrates. Concentrates are another popular form of cannabis that has surely taken the canna-world by storm as recent state-led marijuana legalization initiatives have swept across the United States. The concentrates family includes all sorts of potent extractions, including: shatter, wax, budder, distillate oil, and rosin.

These concentrated cannabis products go through intricate extraction processes that often involve the use of various solvents (such as CO2, butane, or alcohol), to separate the cannabinoids and compounds from the excess plant matter (fats, lipids, etc.)

Depending on the solvent material used in this process, the end result is a textured, thickened, and rich concentrated material full of potent flavors, cannabinoids, and effects.

Cannabis Concentrates by definition:

Cannabis concentrates are the product of distilling down the most desirable parts of the plant. They contain all the cannabinoids and terpenes of cannabis flowers and none of the excess plant material. Ounce for ounce, marijuana concentrates have a far greater proportion of cannabinoids and terpenes than raw cannabis flowers.
